The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always emphasized the importance of unity, friendship and love. The key to saving the galaxy, the world, or just one city, is usually teamwork. After all, no man is an island. And in the face of impossible odds we are stronger together. Over the course of ten years, we’ve seen all kinds of team-ups in the MCU, both on the small screen and the big screen. In 2012, Earth’s mightiest heroes came together for the first time. In Captain America: Civil War they divided into two groups and fought each other. But, despite their differences, in Avengers: Infinity War, the heroes united once again to face their biggest obstacle yet. Infinity War featured a lot of unexpected teams and some have swiftly become our favorites.
On the small screen, all of the Marvel Netflix heroes have a close confidant — someone they can count on when the going gets tough — and Coulson’s team on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is basically one big happy family. But, the best things always come in pairs and a lot of awesome duos have formed within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just look at how many awesome siblings there are in the MCU — Thor and Loki, Jessica and Trish, T’Challa and Shuri. Then, there are the many friendships, bromances, romances and all kinds of complicated and simple relationships. There are tons of amazing duos in the MCU, all of which are interesting in their own way, but we’ve picked out the 25 most iconic.
25 SCIENCE BROS
The friends that create megalomaniacal sentient robots together, stay friends forever. Tony Stark and Bruce Banner became known as science bros in the first Avengers movie. Being the only two men of science, the two hit it off and soon became close friends.
We’ve seen Banner acting as Tony’s therapist, albeit not a very good one. They built Ultron together, not that that’s something to brag about. Although, they did make up for that slight miscalculation by creating Vision, so all is forgiven. We have yet to see Tony’s reaction to Banner using the Hulkbuster.
24 THE WIZARDS
Much like the billionaire playboy Tony Stark, the genius surgeon Stephen Strange went through a traumatizing experience which upended his entire life. But, the time Stephen spent on Kamar-Taj made him a better person — the kind of person who wants to protect human lives even at the cost of his own.
Stephen also made a friend along the way. Wong, the overly protective keeper of ancient books, stood with Stephen against Kaecilius and Dormamu. The wizards joined forces to protect the New York Sanctum Sanctorum and in Infinity War they fought side by side against Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian.
23 AVOCADOS AT LAW
Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson graduated law school with big plans. Following their dreams, the two avocados at law opened the Nelson and Murdock Law Office in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen.
Their business partnership was based on years of friendship. Even after discovering Matt’s secret life as Daredevil, Foggy remained loyal to his best friend until Matt’s vigilantism got out of control. When Foggy could no longer stand to watch his friend risking his life for the sake of vigilante justice, the two split on bad terms. However, a friendship like theirs can’t come to an end just like that.
22 CLOAK & DAGGER
Marvel’s most recent television series, Cloak & Dagger introduced us to two more teenage heroes — Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson. Tandy and Tyrone don’t seem to have much in common at the start of the show, but as the story progresses their lives become more and more entwined.
Their friendship is growing stronger with each passing episode, as they struggle to uncover the truth, overcome obstacles and support each other every step of the way. And as the audience we want to see them succeed. Cloak and Dagger are only getting started and are already one of MCU’s most iconic duos.
21 THE GLADIATORS
In Thor: Ragnarok, the God of Thunder ended up on Sakaar where got stripped of his royal garments, long hair and even his title. Luckily, the now-Lord of Thunder wasn’t all alone in this strange new world. His good friend from work, the Hulk had already established himself as a gladiator champion on Sakaar.
After a bloody battle and a lot of discussion, Thor managed to persuade his buddy to leave Sakaar. Throughout the movie, Thor and Banner truly became friends. Banner’s reaction to Thor arriving at Wakanda says it all.
20 THE DANCERS
There are two types of people in the world — the ones who dance and the ones who don’t. For a while, we all though Gamora belonged to the latter. Clearly, we underestimated Quill’s charm. The two hit it off over the course of the first Guardians film, Gamora and Quill learned to work together, respect each other and even like each other.
They became unwitting galaxy-saving partners, but their relationship slowly turned into friendship and love. Gamora trusted Quill enough to ask him to take her life and Quill loved her enough to actually be willing to go through with it.
19 THUNDER AND RABBIT
We loved all the odd and unexpected team-ups in Avengers: Infinity War, but you gotta admit Thor and Rocket Raccoon kind of stole the show. On their journey to Nidavellir to forge the Stormbreaker, the God of Thunder and the Sweet Rabbit forged a friendship.
Thor opened up to Rocket about his loss and promised to avenge his brother and other Asgardians. And Rocket gave Thor an artificial eye, which is a big deal considering how fond Rocket is of his toy collection. The interactions between these two whacky friends were hilarious and endearing from start to finish.
18 NERD BROS
Every nerdy high school boy or girl needs a nerdy best friend to do nerdy stuff with. Luckily, the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has his best buddy Ned who’s always up for fun science experiments, assisting with superhero duties or just going to a party.
These two high school nerds won our hearts from the very first scene and we can’t wait to see more of their hilarious interactions in Spider-Man: Far From Home when the nerd bros will return to active duty.
17 THE BUDAPEST DUO
If Hawkeye doesn’t make an appearance in the upcoming Black Widow movie, we’re going to be very disappointed. The first Avengers movie gave us so many hints at Clint and Nat’s shared past, even leading us to believe they’re more than just friends, and it’s about time Marvel does something with Budapest.
Clearly, there’s history between them. In The Avengers, it was Natasha who freed Clint from Loki’s mental control and the two fought the Chitauri army together. Natasha even wore an arrow necklace in Winter Soldier. Even when they were on opposing sides in Civil War they pulled their punches because they’re still friends.
16 THE RUNAWAYS
Marvel’s Runaways is a teen drama series but with superpowers, actual villain parents and a pet dinosaur. A group of estranged friends must come together to stop their evil parents. Of course, teen romance further complicates the already strained relationships.
It took some time for Gert and Chase to get together, but it was clear from the very beginning that these two make a great team. They’re childhood friends, they help each other with anything, such as raiding Chase’s dad’s lab and fighting a dinosaur in Gert’s parent’s lab. The perfect teen rebel couple.
15 ALWAYS ON YOUR LEFT
Waking up after being encased in ice for 70 years means everyone you know and love is ether long gone or 70 years older than they were when you last saw them. The world has changed in every conceivable way and there’s a lot to catch up on. When Steve Rogers awoke from his seven-decade-long slumber Sam Wilson was there to help him adjust.
The two met in Captain America: The Winter Soldier when Steve kept running circles around Sam and they have been friends ever since. Sam helped Steve with Bucky and fought on Team Cap during Civil War.
14 ARMOR BROTHERS
Tony Stark’s sidekick — but, you didn’t hear it from us — James Rhodes wasn’t always supportive of his friend’s aspirations to become an armored superhero. But then Marvel re-cast the role and got the cool guy Don Cheadle to play Colonel Rhodes and soon enough Rhodey donned on a suit of armor himself.
The two have been fighting side by side ever since — the invincible Iron Man and his trusty best friend the War Machine. Tony and Rhodey will probably be reunited in Avengers 4 to fight together once more.
13 IT’S A LOVE STORY
The unconventional romance between Scarlet Witch and the android Vision is one of the most heartfelt romances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The little moments these two shared, both in private and on the battlefield in Civil War and especially in Infinity War are proof that Wanda and Vision are a perfect fit.
We’ve seen them save each other, battle each other, and fight like hell for each other. Unfortunately, neither of them is among the survivors of the snap, but hopefully this epic couple will find their way back to life and to each other.
12 MARVEL’S MOST WANTED
Arguing like an old married couple is the staple of any successful relationship. Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter, despite being divorced, still argued like a married couple and, sure enough, as it turned out they were still in love with each other. But the pair wasn’t only good at banter, they actually worked surprisingly well together on the field. Eeven with the constant bickering.
The two were so awesome that they almost got their own TV series, Marvel’s Most Wanted, but ABC thought it was unwanted. Regardless, we’re still hoping these two come back somehow, somewhere.
11 BASEBALL BUDDIES
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers teamed up with fellow Avenger Natasha Romanoff to fight HYDRA. Steve and Natasha put on some stylish on-the-lam cloths and set off to face Steve’s presumed-dead, brainwashed best friend form the past, Bucky Barnes.
Surprisingly enough, the former soldier and the former spy became close friends and excellent co-workers. Their friendship wasn’t even hindered during Civil War when they fought on opposing sides, as they’re seen fighting alongside one another once again in Infinity War.
10 JEWEL AND PATSY
Jessica Jones and Trish Walker may not be related by blood, but they are one of MCU’s best sibling duos. They have been through so much together — Trish’s abusive mother, Kilgrave and Jess‘ PTSD, Trish’s addiction abuse, and so on. They disagree, they fight, they get on each other’s nerves and at each other’s throats, but they always have each other’s back.
Season two ended with the sisters at odds, but we have no doubt this dynamic duo will work out their differences and then proceed to kick some keister in season three.
9 MISS CARTER AND MR. JARVIS
Fans have been clamoring for an Agent Carter revival, but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like such a thing will be happening. The short-lived ABC show was centered around the fearless Peggy Carter, at the time working for SSR, taking down bad guys and trying to have a normal life in the post World War II ’40s.
Her partner in crime-fighting was Edwin Jarvis, Howard Stark’s butler. The two first teamed up to clear Stark’s name and soon became an unstoppable, albeit unconventional spy duo. Their friendship flourished from episode to episode and we would love for their story to continue.
8 HUMANITY’S SHIELD AND CAVALRY
When Agent Phil Coulson assembled his S.H.I.E.L.D. team he couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to get Melinda May back in the game. He invited the so-called Cavalry to be the “bus driver” on the Quinjet and right off the bat we could see sparks flying.
Over the course of five seasons, Coulson and May have had their ups and downs, but they’ve always been there for each other. They are the mom and dad of the team, the shield and the cavalry that keep the Earth safe.
7 THE KING AND THE PRINCESS
T’Challa may be the King of Wakanda, but his little sister Shuri is its most valuable asset. According to Black Panther producer Nate More, Shuri is the smartest character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Head of the Science and Information Exchange, inventor, and genius, Shuri created much of Wakanda’s modern technology and the current Panther Habit.
T’Challa relies on Shuri to supply him with all the goodies he uses to fight for his country and she’s never let him down. Watching these two work together, combining T’Challa’s no-nonsense attitude with Shuri’s childlike excitement is a joy.
6 THE ASTONISHING DUO
The 20th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ant-Man and the Wasp, finally brought Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp to the big screen. Hope van Dyne, the second Wasp in the MCU, teamed up with Scott Lang to save her mother Janet from the Quantum Realm.
The two had worked together in Ant-Man, but this is the first time both acted as superheroes. Ant-Man and the Wasp was a hilarious family movie and a rom-com that gave us one of MCU’s best team-ups. Scott and Hope had each other’s backs, exchanged banter and saved the day together.
5 MR. STARK AND SPIDER-BOY
The father/son relationship that has developed between Tony Stark and Peter Parker wasn’t necessarily what we expected, but now that we’ve got it we wouldn’t have it any other way. Stark has changed a lot since the first Iron Man movie and the fact that he was willing to take young Peter under his wing speaks volumes about the kind of man he’s become.
It’s obvious that Tony cares deeply about Peter and wishes to keep him safe. On the other hand, Peter looks up to Tony, not just as a hero but also as a man and father figure.
4 ULTIMATE FRIENDSHIP GOALS
Back when Steve Rogers was but a scrawny, sickly kid from Brooklyn his best friend Bucky Barnes often stood up for him. The two tackled bullies together, fought the Nazis together, and faced Thanos together. It’s a friendship that withstood the test of time and couldn’t even be erased by brainwashing.
Though many have tried, no force could come between Steve and Bucky for long. These two have that perfect BFF dynamic we all hope to find one day. They’re best buddies both on and off the battlefield.
3 WE ARE GROOT
It’s not every day that you get to see a friendship between a genetically enhanced raccoon and a walking tree in a blockbuster movie. But that’s the thing about the MCU, it gives us amazing gifts we didn’t even know we wanted.
With hilarious banter and cool action scenes, Rocket Raccoon and Groot instantly became a fan-favorite duo. The friendship from the first Guardians film turned into a father/son relationship in the sequel and Infinity War, making their relationship even more interesting.
2 THE SONS OF ODIN
Thor and Loki are by far the most popular sibling duo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and that says a lot when the competition is as fierce as it is. They were pitted against each other from a very young age, and have competed for their father’s attention and Asgardian throne their whole lives. But no matter what, Thor and Loki find a way to make their sibling relationship work.
The brothers proved that despite their differences, when push comes to shove, they will stand by each other. Whether they’re bickering or saving the world, it’s undeniable that this twosome is always fun.
In season five of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. everyone’s favorite couple, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons, finally tied the knot. The two met in college, started working for S.H.I.E.L.D. as research partners and became inseparable.
Over the course of five seasons, we’ve watched Fitz and Simmons save the world together and save each other countless times. They are the perfect team in the lab, on the field and in romance. No other duo in the MCU comes even close to the adorable, fierce and genius FitzSimmons.
